Age estimation from 3D X-ray CT images of human fourth ribs

چکیده
This project consists in the evaluation of the feasibility to estimate the age of death from the analysis of 3D X-ray images depicting human fourth ribs. An image processing chain is described, aiming at automatically analyzing the sternal end of the fourth rib, which is known to be reliable to evaluate the person age, since distinctive modifications occur at this extremity during a human life. This first study relies on a set of 14 ribs acquired by X-ray CT imaging. In the final work, the analysis and the validation of our method will be led on more than 400 samples of human ribs.

3D Reconstruction of Human Ribcage and Lungs and Improved Visualization of Lung X-ray Images Through Removal of the Ribcage
The analysis of X-ray imagery is the standard pre-screening approach for lung cancer. Unlike CTscans, X-ray images only provide a 2D projection of the patient’s body. As a result occlusions, i.e. some body parts covering other areas of the body within this projected X-ray image, can make the analysis more difficult. For example, the ribs, a predominant feature within the X-ray image, can cover ...

In addition to medical recognition applications, X-ray CT-scan images are increasingly found to have more innovative and widespread applications. Due to the ability of producing high resolution and high contrast images from soft tissues with low attenuation coefficients, the usage of X-ray micro-focus source, which has a very small focal point (in the range of micrometer), plays an important ro...
متن کاملFusion of the rib on plain chest radiography: a real or false image?
Fig. 2 Conflict interest statement The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest to the publication of this article. There are many types of congenital anomalies and deformities of the ribs, including developmental fusion of two or more ribs, articulation or bridge formation between two ribs, and bifid rib. These morphological anomalies and anatomical variants occur in 0.15%–0.31% ...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate whether the overgrowth of costal cartilage may cause pectus carinatum using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT). METHODS Twenty-two patients with asymmetric pectus carinatum were included. The fourth, fifth and sixth ribs and costal cartilages were semi-automatically traced, and their full lengths were measured on three-dimensional CT images using curved mul...
متن کاملImpact of Photon Spectra on the Sensitivity of Polymer Gel Dosimetry by X-Ray Computed Tomography
Introduction: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of X-ray spectra on the sensitivity of a polymer gel dosimeter imaged with a conventional computed tomography (CT) scanner. Material and Methods: The whole process of CT imaging of an irradiated polymer gel was simulated by MCNPX Monte Carlo (MC) code. The imaging of polyacrylamide gel was accomplished by means of a co...
